The maritime city of Liverpool has a striking new form on the city skyline, that of the curving prow of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and already nicknamed ‘The Liner’.
The spectacular cancer hospital, in the city’s ‘Knowledge Quarter’ opened as part of a £162m investment to transform cancer care in Cheshire and Merseyside. It will become the main hub in The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust’s network of treatment centres across the region. The 11-storey building incorporates single en-suite patient bedrooms, radiotherapy linac treatment suites all equipped with Cabelflow medical supply units, medical equipment rail and clinical therapy equipment supports.
The stepped back construction profile at its upper levels to create external terrace spaces for wards, especially for the chemotherapy floors which offer panoramic views across Liverpool.
With Laing O’Rourke as main contractor, and AECOM providing engineering services, the complexity of each bedhead for cancer settings has been meticulously designed and applied.
